Hey friend!
If you’ve been following my posts for awhile, you’ll notice I didn’t post last week.
If you’re wondering why –
Well, two things.
First, I did commit to create one post every fortnight. So you’ve actually been receiving a bonus one every other week, which is more than what I promised.
But second, because I’ve been really thinking about how I can give you practical value through these articles, I thought it best to be inconsistent with the bonuses and just skip one week so that I can strategize topics that work for better for you at this time.
Wait, but why be inconsistent?
Shouldn’t I be consistent to be able to reach my goals? Doesn’t that hurt my momentum?
Consistency in goal setting and also in business and marketing is just the same as any other consistency in life.
It’s really valuable unless is not.
Let me explain.
When you’re starting a business, there are daily and weekly routines that you can implement.
For someone like me who does Youtube, it can look like shooting, editing, and posting one video once a week. I also write one newsletter and blog post a week (almost *wink*).
If you’re a freelancer or business owner, consistently connecting with your target audience daily will benefit your business greatly.
But let’s say after consistently posting a video every week for 10 weeks, I find that I am only able to get tens of views. And I can barely pass 100 views –
Should I stick to consistency or should I do something different?
Now since I used Youtube as an example, breaking it down to what I am consistent about is essential.
Because it’s not just about staying true to my upload schedule. Yes this is one thing that’s consistent, but it’s not the only thing that I’m doing consistently.
My content format may also be consistent. The way I formulate my titles may be consistent. The way I add tags, the process Im using from pre-production to publishing, and even my posting schedule (say every Sunday) may also be consistent as well.
But what if my video content was also consistently boring?
Do you think my audience would like me to stay consistent?
Your guess is a correct as mine. Or quite possibly, they’d just move on to a more entertaining dude that’ll give them more value.
It’s the same with losing weight. A consistent diet and workout regimen will work for a time until you plateau.
It happens.
But when it happens, what used to work, won’t anymore..
And if you stick to it in the name of consistency.
Well, I doubt you’d see results.
But my point is, you can be consistent all you want but if you’re not getting the results that you desire, perhaps you need to reassess what you’re doing. Maybe changing the way you’re doing things would help. If you’re doing content marketing, maybe you need to learn how to title your videos and posts better. Perhaps it’s better to change your posting schedule.
Singing everyday out of tune doesn’t make you a great singer. Someone, preferably an expert in vocal training, has to come in to point you to the right direction, and following that will probably be to your advantage.
So yes, be consistent, but hold on to consistency lightly. Test until you have enough data to decide whether to go on, then tweak some things, or totally change course.
It’s really ok 🙂
